Sunday Afternoon Outage via DoS Attack
We had an extended partial outage today from 11 AM PST
to around 6 PM PST caused by intermittent hardware
failure due to Denial of Service attacks.
The attacks were all coming down our Los Angeles AT&T
line, so traffic going through Seattle on our Verizon
line was working as expected during the outage with the
exception of a few 10 minute windows while equipment
was being tested.

Kattare and Qwest Communications (our 'Last Mile'
provider here in Corvallis) both thought that there was
an issue with a piece of hardware downtown in the Qwest
switching office. However, when taken down and tested,
all equipment worked as expected. It turned out that
equipment was only failing when the line was up, and
then only because of the number of packets being sent
across the line.

The Denial of Service was sourced to China, and AT&T
was able to block it at the point of entry in Los Angeles.

Everything should be stable for now. We will be doing
some follow up to see if there is anything we can do to
mitigate such attacks in the future.
