This document was written for Windows 95. The settings are
similar for Windows 98 and ME, but there are a few differences in how to get to
the control panels; usually if you can't find a particular button
in Windows 98 or ME, it's been moved to a tab. We've also included some
notes that should help figuring out the differences.
Before you begin:
It is assumed that you have already installed Windows on your computer and
have it running the way you like it. It is also assumed that you already
have a modem and have it installed and working properly. If you don't,
make sure that you get that taken care of before proceeding (see the modem
configuration instructions at the end of this document). Keep your Windows CD-ROM or floppy disks handy. You
may need them during the setup.
Before your computer can make a connection, you need to install
the software which dials your computer's modem (Dial-Up Networking).
Usually Dial-Up Networking can be found by going to the START menu, then
choosing PROGRAMS and then choosing ACCESSORIES. (Windows ME Users will have to go to the START menu, then
choose PROGRAMS, then choose ACCESSORIES, then choose COMMUNICATIONS.) Dial-Up Networking is a
part of Windows, if it wasn't installed this when you installed Windows, now's
a good time to do it.
- Open the Control Panel.
- Double click on Add/Remove Programs.
- Click on the Windows Setup tab.
- Double click on Communications
- Dial-Up Networking should be selected. You can install the
others if
you want. Hyper Terminal is especially good to keep around.
- Click OK
- Click OK
- After it is installed, click on Start, Programs, Accessories,
(then Communications
for Windows ME) then
Dial-Up
Networking.
- Double click on Make New Connection
- Name it Kattare.
- Make sure your modem is selected.
- Click on Configure...
- Click on the Options tab.
- Bring up terminal window before dialing should not be
selected.
- Bring up terminal window after dialing should not be
selected.
- Operator assisted or manual dial should not be selected.
- Leave Wait for credit card tone alone.
- Display modem status should be selected.
- Click OK
- Click on Next >
- Enter the phone number in the Telephone Number box as follows:
- Albany: (541) 248-1535
- Beaverton: (503) 923-1535
- Corvallis: (541) 243-1535
- Eugene: (541) 246-1535
- McMinnville (503) 379-1535
- Portland: (503) 688-1535
- Salem: (503) 967-1535
- Click on Next >
- Click Finish
- Right click on Kattare and choose Properties
- Click on Server Types (This is under the Networking Tab in Windows
ME)
- Choose PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet for the
Type of
Dial-Up Server. (This will read PPP: Internet. Windows ME, etc. in
Windows ME)
- Log on to network should NOT be selected. (Note, this setting is
under the Security Tab in Windows ME)
- Enable software compression should be selected.
- Require encrypted password should NOT be selected.
(Note,
this setting is under the Security Tab in Windows ME)
- NetBEUI should not be selected.
- IPX/SPX Compatible should not be selected.
- TCP/IP should be selected.
- Click on TCP/IP Settings...
- Choose Server assigned IP address
- Choose Assigned name server addresses
- Use IP header compression should be selected.
- Use default gateway on remote network should be selected.
- Click OK
- Click OK
- Choose Connections, Settings from the menu. (Note, this is under the
Dialing Tab in Windows ME)
- Redial should be selected.
- Before giving up retry should be 10 or so.
- Between times should be 2 secs.
- Prompt to use Dial-Up Networking should be selected
- Click OK
- Use the RIGHT mouse button and drag the new Kattare icon onto either the
desktop or the Start menu and choose create shortcut here to make it easy
to get to later.
The next step is calling Kattare. You will have to input your login name and
password this time, but after one successful connection, you shouldn't
have to anymore. (You may have to click a box telling it to keep your
password.)
- Either select Kattare from the Start menu or double click its icon
on the
desktop, depending on where you put it.
- Input your login name in the User name field.
- Input your password in the Password field.
- Click Connect
- The Connecting to Kattare window will come up and you'll hear your modem
connect to Kattare.
- A status bar will come up with information on the connection
process.
- After it makes a successful connection, it will tell you what
speed you
are connected at along with how long you've been connected.
- You can now use any of the Windows based programs to read mail,
browse the
web, read news, ftp, telnet, you name it.
- When you are finished, click on Disconnect.
If you don't get connected...
- Make sure the user name and password you entered are correct.
- Check
that the CAPS LOCK key isn't depressed when you entered your
password and user name; both are case-sensitive.
- Check that your username does not have @kattare.com
appended to it.
- Test that your modem is working by dialing out with another program,
such as Hyperterminal.
- If the modem is not dialing out, make sure that
the modem is connected properly to your computer and the the phone
jack.
- Check that the modem has been installed and configured properly.
- Make sure you call waiting is turned off, or that nobody picked up the
phone as you were dialing out. Extra signals or static over the phone
line can confuse the modem.
- If you can use a web browser to connect to
http://206.163.128.1
but not http://www.kattare.com, then there is a problem with the DNS
setting. Recheck step 3 in the Dial-up Networking
setup, and follow the instructions for network setup if you have this problem.
If for some reason you click on the PEAK icon and the modem doesn't dial
out, you may need to reconfigure the modem.
- Open up the Control Panel and double-click on Modems. Your modem should be
listed in the list of "modems that are set up on this computer."
- Click on Properties.
- The Port should already be set (usually COM2).
- Adjust the Speaker volume to your preference.
- Set the Maximum speed to 38400 if you are using a 14.4 modem and
57600 otherwise.
- Click on the Connection tab. The settings should be:
- Data bits: 8
- Parity: None
- Stop bits: 1
- Wait for dial tone before dialing should be selected.
- Cancel the call if not connected within 60 seconds.
- Disconnect a call if idle should be left unselected since PEAK
will
automatically disconnect you after 15 minutes of idle time. If you
don't want to use the whole 15 minutes, go ahead and set this to
something shorter.
- Click on Port Settings...
- Use FIFO buffers should be selected if you have a 14.4 modem or
faster.
- Both Receive Buffer and Transmit Buffer should be set to High.
If you
have any problems with your connections, this might need to be
lowered.
- Click OK
- Click Advanced...
- Use error control should be selected, but Required to
connect and
Compress data should be left blank. Microsoft uses its own
compression algorithms that are better than the ones that come with
your modem. There is usually a slight performance increase when using
theirs.
- Use flow control should be selected and Hardware (RTS/CTS)
should be your choice.
- Modulation type should be Standard.
- Extra settings should be blank
- Record a log file should not be selected.
- Click OK
- Click OK
- Click on Dialing Properties
- Adjust the settings as appropriate for your location.
- An important one to look at is the This location has call
waiting. If
you have call waiting, make sure this is selected. This will disable
call waiting before each call. If you don't select it, the click that
the call waiting generates will interrupt your connection and hang up
the line.
- Click OK
- Click Close
If you are able to connect to Kattare, but internet clients are unable to
locate web servers or mail servers, there may be a problem with the
networking software. It doesn't hurt to double-check your network settings
if the modem is working correctly, but you can't connect to anything on
the internet.
- Open the Control Panel
- Double Click on Network. You need the Client for Microsoft Networks,
Dial-Up Adapter, and TCP/IP. If any of the three are not there, click the
Add... button. Also, if you have an AOL Dial-Up adapter installed,
you will have to remove it to be able to connect to us.
- To add the Client for Microsoft Networks, double click on Client.
- Choose Microsoft from the Manufacturers list.
- Choose Client for Microsoft Networks from the Network
Clients
list.
- Click OK
- To add the Dial-Up Adapter, double click on Adapter.
- Choose Microsoft from the Manufacturers list.
- Choose Dial-Up Adapter from the Network Adapters list.
- Click OK
- To add the TCP/IP, double click on Protocol.
- Choose Microsoft from the Manufacturers list.
- Choose TCP/IP from the Network Protocols list.
- Click OK
- Primary Network Logon should be Client for Microsoft Networks.
- Don't worry about File and Print Sharing...
- Choose the Client for Microsoft Networks.
- Click on Properties
- Log on to Windows NT domain should not be selected.
- Windows NT domain should be blank
- Network logon options should be set to Quick logon.
- Click OK
- Choose Dial-Up Adapter.
- Click on Properties
- Choose Enhanced mode (32 bit and 16 bit) NDIS driver
- Click on the Bindings tab.
- Make sure TCP/IP is selected.
- Click on the Advanced tab.
- Record a log file should be set to No.
- Use IPX header compression should be set to Yes.
- Click OK
- Click OK
- Windows will now want to restart your computer. Go ahead and
take a stretch break while the machine reboots.
